Contraceptive Pills

It's time to update my fancy-schmancy text file of contraceptive pill patients.

Currently, I have the following as volunteers to help make them:

And I have the following as men who are taking them:

Bill Weasley
Ianto Jones
Ronon Dex

If I've missed anyone on either list, let me know.  Remember that the pills take 90 days to become effective, so if you need an immediate solution, a condom is going to be your best option.

Thank you!

Hallo lab-types.

For NDPD, Alcuin is receiving a tattoo kit (something like this). This includes a small autoclave. It's nothing fancy, but I don't think the lab already has one? In which case, it will be handy for other things (doctors sterilizing instruments, etc.) and will of course be available for anyone to use.

In fact, I will probably have the stuff appear in the lab, since Alcuin is there sometimes helping Phedre make soaps and things.

Soooo is everyone okay with a small corner of the lab being annexed for use as the Island Tattoo Parlor? With bonus sterilization equipment for general lab use? :)

In light of the departure of Grissom, Sara, and Catherine, there needs to be a lab decision on a few things.

Number one is the council rep from the lab.   Catherine was selected by a vote at a lab meeting.  We can certainly handwave another lab meeting and decide who would have been chosen to replace her if anyone has any suggestions on who ought to do that.  We have lots of talented scientists, so if any of them would like to be the rep, please put their names forward.

Number two is lab leadership.  At the moment, Bones is in charge of General Squintiness and Abby is in charge of Experimental Medicine (and probably handles a lot of the day to day running of the lab).    This leaves a spot for Criminal Forensics.  Now, given that Abby and Bones both do Criminal Forensics, this could be rolled into their jobs, but if someone would like to be in charge of that specifically, please let me know.

Related to lab leadership, Abby started running the lab when we had very few research-oriented doctors (MD or PhD) available.  I know some people get a little squiffy (okay, a lot squiffy) about non-doctoral lab leadership.  If any pups would be likely to object to Abby being in charge, please do let me know.  I promise I will not be offended.  Abby might be a little feisty, but if it's IC for your pup to question Abby's position, it is totally cool with me.

I know it's the holidays and we're all busy, so none of these decisions have to be made right now, but they should be made pretty soon, especially in the case of the council rep.

Soooo...this might be a weird question, but does anyone squint pups want to dissect or examine a huge disembodied human brain?

Calvin's going to be getting his item this weekend, IT from 'A Wrinkle in Time' is going to be showing up on the pool table. That means a large human-seeming brain is going to be out of the blue. It's still going to be alive when it arrives (how it's kept alive when it's a disembodied brain I am not sure, but that's the canon) but after a minute or two the throbbing is going to stop and it'll be well and truly dead.

He's going to want to destroy it by...stomping on it and catching it on fire and then throwing the ashes into the ocean. But if anyone in particular was eager to look at it, he could probably be convinced to give it over to research.

Mostly I figured I should let the science-types on the island know it's happening before there's randomly a brain on the island. So...yes.

fred and george want fireworks. sam and i are not scientists. could someone who understands things like chemistry let us know if it is semi-plausible that people on the island could make saltpeter using the haber process? it kind of seems like it's highly scientific and needs crazy equipment, but i could be wrong.

alternately, does anyone know how else to make gunpowder in a way that won't take over a year? :D your twins thank you most humbly, and promise a fireworks display in your honour. XD

Contraceptive Pill

Hi island science geeks (and general island residents)

It's been 6 months  (3 months on, 3 months off to demonstrate the temporary effects) since Abby started her clinical trial of the male contraceptive pill and it's time for the pill to start being released to the general public.   The mods have approved it being effective and Kat has kindly allowed me to handwave Ianto teaching Abby how to make pill casings, which means making larger numbers of pills will be much easier than using the method Dr. Koskuisko taught Abby a long time ago, so it's a go.

What I need is a list of twenty or so men who would want to be on the first wave of pill "prescriptions."  Obviously Abby is not a doctor and can't prescribe, so what she'd do is take down the list of people and then pass it to the clinic, who will do the actual prescribing.  Whether the conversation between pup and doctor is handwaved is up to the invididual doctor and patient.   This pill, like all hormonal contraceptives, does not protect against STDs, so if your pup would like to be super safe, a condom is still their best option.  On the other hand, if you just don't want your pup to have kids, this will be right up their alley.

If anyone would like the extremely detailed scientific explanation (and literature reference!), I can provide it, but in general it is a daily pill with a 90 day ramp up to maintenance levels, after which your pup will have no sperm and thus be temporarily sterile.  For that first 90 days, they need to use a backup method.   If they would like to cease taking the pill, it will take another 90 days to return to normal levels of sperm.    Abby will probably ask them to come in once a month to be sure it's actually still working, so if your pup would be embarrassed about donating a semen sample, you should probably consider that.    Also, she can't make 1800 pills all at once without not leaving the lab for about a week solid (which would be frowned on by various parties), so they'll need to get their pills from the clinic on probably a bi-monthly basis.    If your pup would like to volunteer to help make the pills, she would probably love them forever (figuratively, anyway).

Any questions?  Comments?  Snide remarks?

Jill received her item today, which is a vortex mixer as seen here. It's brand new and high quality, bought for her after her first vortex was tampered with and kind of exploded. XD This is just to let people in the lab and clinic know that the vortex will be in the lab now and is available to be used, though it will remain on Jill's work station.

Clinical Trial Details

Feb. 8th, 2008 | 11:00 am
posted by: abbysciuto in islandscience

Now that my brain is not quite as full of fluff as it has been for the past week, I have managed to remember that I need to post the details of Abby's clinical trial and get it officially going.  It's a simple trial, and should not be much effort for any pups involved.  It will also not affect the pup's long-term fertility, although there will be a weaning-off period in which the pup will not be fertile even after they're not taking the contraceptive pill, just like there'll be a period after they begin taking the pill in which they're still fertile.  A little advance planning should take care of both those situations.

The participants will take a pill once a day at the lab.  Abby will be making the pills for now since there are only ten participants.  Dr. K taught her how to make pills long long ago, and she's using that knowledge to the fullest.  Eventually she may need someone who's skilled with metal to make her a pill press, but that would only be needed if the clinical trial works and she expands the drug's availability to the general island population, and we're definitely not there yet.

Once a week, between, say 9 am and 12pm on Mondays, the participants will supply one sperm sample in an unlabeled cup.  There will be a spot on the lab bench for them to place their samples and Abby will NOT be in the lab during that period, just in case anyone's shy about her knowing which sample is theirs.    She'll analyze the samples and mark down the sperm count and motility but no names will be associated with any samples unless there is a specific aberration of some type.

Current trial participants are:
Gus Knickel
Bill Weasley
Remus Lupin
Rupert de Worde
Rob Chase
Tim Riggins
Tony DiNozzo
Hunter Novotny-Bruckner

Which means we need 2 more volunteers to reach a statistically meaningful number.  If anyone would like to volunteer, please let me know.

As of this post, there is a transmission electron microscope available for use in the lab. It's a little scorched and a little dented, but it works fine if you give it love.

Appropriate additions have been made to the wiki. This is x-posted to slated.

IG Lab Meeting

Jessie and I batted this idea around, but then real life ate me and I forgot to post it.

We need an in-game lab meeting.  I don't know who's going where doing what with which pieces of equipment, and neither does Abby.  Well, okay, she knows some stuff, but we have a prodigious number of squints right now, and several projects going on.  Scientists keep really random hours, so everyone might not always see everyone else.  Trust me.  I don't see people for days when we theoretically work in the same lab.

So, when would be a good time?  This weekend might be too short notice.  But maybe next week?  Or next weekend?

What do you think?
